Spray Tan

A spray-on tan has to be one of the easiest and cost effective ways to get yourself an allover instant golden tan ready for a vacation or special event.  I had the opportunity to try this beauty treatment, a completely customized hand sprayed tan at the Golden Glo Airbrush Tanning salon in Scottsdale.  I am absolutely amazed how natural it looks and how gorgeous it made me feel.

Meet Kaylan and Jen, the co-owners of Golden Glo Airbrush Tanning in Scottsdale. They met at aesthetics school and clicked with each other right away.  After gaining experience working in a tanning salon, they decided to start their own business.  These two lovely ladies make you feel right at ease the minute you walk in the door. They take their time explaining how it all works, answering any questions or concerns you may have, and they keep a record of your specific tan color and requirements for future appointments.

Who Needs a Tan in Arizona Anyway?

Despite living in a State with almost 365 days of sunshine a year, you'd be surprised how often a tan fades.  During the long hot days of summer, and when I say hot, I mean bloody scorching, like 119° Fahrenheit, Arizonians avoid being outside as much as possible.  It's our hibernation period when we wallow behind closed doors in refrigerated air, hot footing it (literally) from car to building like vampires that will burn when exposed to sunlight! The sun is also extremely dangerous during this time with many heat warnings in effect. And so the tan fades, with the exception of a few splats of color on exposed body parts during early morning dog walks!

The rest of the year we can play outdoors all we like, which I make the most of with
tennis, hiking, running, cycling and more.  During this time my tan looks more like a kaleidoscope of multi-colors ranging from white to brown and all the varying hues in between as it outlines my varying sportswear - not a pretty sight (naked)!

Just left the tanning salon. Time to cure!
This is what I wore when I went to get the spray tan - old, loose fitting tank top and pants, all black. After initially getting the tan and before your first shower thereafter it's quite possible some of the color may rub off on your clothes, particularly if you perspire. Not a big deal as it washes out when laundered, but it's a dead giveaway if you're running errands and your tan is melting into your clothes!

I took everything off except my knickers which still allowed my butt to get a good covering. However, I would probably wear different ones next time as the band was lacy and the spray got through and left a faint lacy pattern on my skin - sort of like tattooed-on knickers!

Now it's time to show this baby off. Calls girlfriend, "Are you busy, it's a gorgeous afternoon, shall I stop by and we can hang by your pool?"  Girlfriend "Sure, that would be great, come on over!" Rats, she got a tan too!

You can see a little bit of my knicker line!
The tan gets darker over the next 24 hours so it's best to avoid showering until then. It's a sugar based product which turns you brown rather like a cut apple turns brown when left out.

Kaylan and Jen's spray tanning is totally customized. Unlike a tanning booth where it's all automated, you can really achieve the look you want reviewing the process as you go. Based on my existing body color Kaylan chose a medium tan for me. She sprays it exactly where it's needed, and goes over areas that may need more coverage to match those darker shades that get a lot of exposure. She instructs you on the different poses she needs from you so she can get the best possible coverage, which even includes those sneaky little creases under our midlife butts and wrinkles above our knees and elbows. "No stone left un turned", so to speak!

The next morning, my legs looked an amazing color, the same color as my English breakfast tea in fact. Best of all, I didn't have a tennis skirt line or white feet! With all the sport I do, it normally looks like I'm wearing white socks when I'm wearing strappy evening shoes, so embarrassing!

I like my legs dark like I like my morning tea!
The first shower rinses off the remaining product leaving you with a smoother overall tan. If you don't shower until the next day be aware that you may get some product on your bed sheets. It does wash off!

It's the perfect treatment for snowbirds who visit Arizona in the winter months coming from cooler climates. It makes you feel better about donning your swimsuit by the pool if you're feeling a little pasty white. We all like to have tanned legs, it somehow makes us look leaner and fitter, so it's the perfect solution for exposing those pins in our golf or tennis skirts and shorts. It's also a quick and easy solution to cover up existing tan lines caused by sportswear if you have a special dress to wear to an event.

The regular medium tan such as I had costs $30 and  lasts about a week, just enough time to get a bit of natural color if Scottsdale  is your destination for the winter or you're going on an extended vacation. If your preference is a year round sunless tan, then you can become a member and get regular tans at a greatly reduced price.

We can all agree that the less sun exposure we have, especially as we get older is better. So don't forget, even with your beautiful bronzed bod, still slather on the high factor sun protection when you're outside and don't forget ears, the back of your neck and the back of your hands (highly prone to aging quickly)!

You can contact Kaylan and Jen by phone 480-912-7519. They are located at 10751 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd B-105 Scottsdale, AZ 85259.  Also, check out their Instagram account  @goldengloskinaz

Hi Cindy,

Thank you for stopping by! This was my first ever spray tan so I really didn't know what to expect. I was completely amazed at how real it looked, it almost had me convinced that I really did look like that... but then I remembered my feet are normally milk bottle white ha ha!
